Bray SC Social Calendar - Upcoming October Events and September Round-Up

Published 10:38 on 1 Oct 2023

Looking at the club social calendar for the coming month of October and also including a recap by the organisers of events held in the club during September.

Upcoming October Events

Ireland vs Scotland

The final Rugby World Cup game in Pool B is due to be played on Saturday 7 th October.

The club bar will be showing the match and will be open from 19:30, so come on down and watch it there.

Annual Prizegiving

On Sunday 15 th October, the annual prizegiving is being held in the club at 15:00. Even if you aren't eligible for any of this seasons prizes, come down enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and support the prize winners (and the bar). What better way to enjoy a (probably rainy) Sunday afternoon than sitting there looking out at the weather and enjoying a pint in the warmth.

Swan, Otter and Harbour Wldlife Talk vs Rugby World Cup Semi-Finals

Friday 20 th October had been scheduled in our calendar as the date for the harbour wildlife talk. However, looking at the Irish teams current success in the Rugby World Cup, we were afraid that our swans and otters would lose out to Stade de France, so we're now scheduling the semi-final match to be shown that evening and Liz is volunteering to lay on some finger food to help keep everyone's strength up.

Kick off is is scheduled for 20:00 and the bar will open from 19:30

Sailing Supper

Saturday 21 st October will see the first post-covid sailing supper to be run in the club.

For those who have joined the club since we the last one of these were run: Sailing Suppers are a long-standing tradition in the club, whereby one or more club members volunteer to provide a sit down three course meal for a very reasonable cost. It is a set menu often preceded by a complimentary aperitif.

These tend to be very popular events and are enjoyed by everyone who attends. This is also a great opportunity for our various different sailing groups (Cruisers, Dinghies, Skillbuilders) to come together and mix with each other. It is also a great way for new members to meet other members

This sailing supper is being run by Helmut Zarka & Fiona Cassidy (with the assistance of pressganged family members) and the cost will be 30 euro pp. A selection of wine will be available to purchase from the bar at a very reasonable cost of 16 euro per bottle and bookings can be made through the club website here (just remember to log in first).

Bray SC Choir

The BSC choir is continuing to rehearse every second week on Thursday night. If you are interested in joining, please contact JJ O'Dwyer 087-2428442 for further information.

September Recap

80s Night (Gerry Rowe)

On Saturday 16 th September, Gerry Rowe organised and hosted an 80's night in the sailing club.

The night kicked off on a positive note with a great win by Ireland in the Rugby World Cup which was been shown on the TV.

About 40 people attended on the night and packed out the dance floor enjoying all the best music from the 80's and in true 80's night club style no night would be complete without a curry which was very well received!

Everyone who came along made a great effort to re live the decade that fashion forgot and there was plenty of leg warmers, oversized earrings and bad makeup on display. The ticket price included the food, music and one drink and all who attended agreed that the night was a great success and good value for money.

And Gerry is now hinting at a possible 70s night next spring.

End of Season Pico Club

Pico Club ended for the season in fine style on Sunday 17th of September, with over 20 juniors on the water for maximum fun sailing, capsizing, fat-paddying and pier jumping into a soupy-looking harbour. Heavy rain had no impact on our sprits, and a barbecue, cake and the much-coveted BSC paper plate awards brought the afternoon to a close.

We look forward to seeing the junior members during the autumn and winter too, keep an eye on announcements for details.

Bray SC Choir Revival

The BSC choir held its inaugural rehearsal on Thursday, 21st of September under the direction of Joan Dempsey our new musical director. The choir plan to rehearse every second week on Thursday night.

And thanks to Ann-Marie, Eleanor, Gerry & JJ for their photos and descriptions
