Race Night in the Club

So last night saw the first Race Night to be run in the club in approximately 30 years and a great night was had by all.

Basics were as follows, the €10 entry fee which included a drink from the bar, some hot nibbles and a race card.

After that 7 races with 8 horses (or pigs) in each, €5 per bet and pay out on first placings.

Some of us were quite restrained, having decided beforehand to limit our potential losses and pace ourselves at one bet per race. Others wanted a greater thrill and were a lot freer in their betting (in some cases this definitely paid off).

The first few races were run to a relatively calm and civilised audience.

However it didn't take long for people's true natures to appear and before long the horses were being cheered, heckled and screamed at. Horses falling were greeted with loud cheers or groans depending on where your bet lays. The atmosphere was buzzing and everyone had a great time.

Overall it was a fantastic night and major thanks are due to Gerry for organising, Patricia for the food and Donna & Oran for acting as Race Commentator and Bookies.

Also thanks are due to Patricia for dressing Gerry for the evening

Now to the results, €321 was given out in prizes, which includes €108 to one very happy person and the most important part (at least for those who bought a horse) are:...

Results

  • Race 1 - I'm Working While Drinking, owned by John Harding
  • Race 2 Dalliance, owned by Mark Whelan
  • Race 3 - Tony Garry, owned surprisingly by Tony himself (and there's a rumour going around that he didn't even bet on his own horse, so lost those additional winnings)
  • Race 4 Faliraki, owned by JJ O'Dwyer

Congratulations to all of you and Gerry will be in touch with all of you regarding your winnings

And finally, all of us who were there last night are hoping we can persuade Gerry to run another one later in the year.

And for those of you who weren't don't miss the opportunity for a great night next time
