Dear Members,
Last Saturday saw the successful staging of The Nivea Sun Dinghy Regatta (incorporating the Murdoch Regatta). The review of the event follows below but I would just like to thank all those who helped with the organising and running of the regatta, coordinated by Luke Fegan.
Unfortunately the weather forced cancellation of the second day (much to the relief of some exhausted competitors!), but Saturday's sailing was exhilerating and hard fought, with The Tod Chadwick Memorial Trophy going to Rory Groves. Well Done Rory. Many thanks go to our OD, Barry McNeaney who once again directed a great day's racing on the water.
This Sunday sees the Bray Airshow return and to avail of the best view in Bray of the event, make sure to book your Lions Club Barbeque tickets now. Tickets are €20 (€10 Children ) and are available from Tony Foran (by return email to Tony.Foran@InterPay.ie -your credit is good 'til the day!!) or from members of Bray Lions Club.
I would remind members wishing to attend that access roads will be closed as will the harbour to vehicles so get there early.
Sailors Please note: As a result of the airshow Sunday Dinghy Sailing has been rescheduled for this Saturday, FG 1710. OD, AOD and boat crew who were due for sailing duty on Sunday have a day off!
Due to the increased number of people around the strand and harbour areas over the Summerfest we would ask members to be security conscious and extra vigilant, both with regard to their own boats and to the club area itself.
-Please do not leave the dinghy pens open and unattended;
-Please do not remove the padlocks from the gates;
-Please do not leave the padlock access code visible
-Please do not leave the club hall door open if the courtyard is empty
-Make sure your boats are locked and secure, there has already been 1 break-in in the harbour
The bar will be open as usual this Friday from 6pm. If you are rostered for duty, your start time is 9.15pm. If you are unable to make your duty please find someone you can swap with.
Liz Walshe,
Commodore.
The Bray Sailing Club Annual Nivea Sun Dinghy Regatta was held on Saturday 16th July amidst challenging conditions.
The event was scheduled as a 2 day event over the weekend of the 16-17th July, but with a big low pressure coming in over the Atlantic it meant Sunday was a non runner for even our bravest, with winds in excess of gale force allowing a very small window for the regatta on Saturday.
Tides were perfect with a high tide at lunch time. Wind gust in excess of 30 knots were recorded in fresh blustery conditions with many of the entrants having the occasional dip.
The Principal Race Officer Barry McNeany wasted no time in running 16 races for the 4 different fleets in very challenging conditions.
The event was very well supported with over 50 sailors on the water including visiting sailors from the Royal St George Yacht Club & Wicklow Sailing Club.
Racing was extremely tight with 4 different race fleets represented including the ancient order of Enterprises, the re-emerging Flying Fifteens, the Laser class and the visiting Topper Fleet of Wicklow Sailing Club.
Wicklow Sailing Club were very well represented with a masterful performance by Luke Murphy on the water in the Laser Fleet.
After a long days racing and many soar bones and boats, 3 of the 4 fleets were tied for first place in their respective fleets.
The Inaugural Tod Chadwick Memorial Trophy was awarded to Laser Sailor Rory Groves.
After a hard day's work and much scrutinising of results, the day was capped off by a BBQ in the Club House, prize giving and Live Music.

Sailing Secretary

There will be 6 races over the 2 days with race starts for a variety of fleets.
Registration will be held from 9.00-10.00 in the club on the Saturday morning with an 11am first gun.
The notice of race is posted on the club website and expressions of interest to race are sought by Wednesday to allow the club plan resources.
The inaugural Tod Chadwick memorial Trophy will be awarded as part of the event.
It promises to be an exciting weekend in the club with the annual Kilmartin swim on Sunday afternoon.
There will be a full BBQ available to all on Saturday afternoon with live music.
Monday 27 June 2011
This weekend saw the club's first open event of the season with the now annual Midsummer Twilight Regatta. Unfortunately the first night's racing had to be cancelled due to high winds and poor visibility but six races were sailed on Saturday and Sunday.
Lorcan Pratt, the club's Senior Instructor acted as Race Officer on Saturday and provided competitors with three races which saw Sean Hayes going into an overnight lead over David Bailey by just one point in the mixed Laser fleet. In the fast PY fleet, Ray Comiskey established a convincing lead with two firsts and a second.
On Sunday evening, racing was provided by John and Brenda Hayes and David Bailey moved swiftly into first place with three firsts, edging Sean Hayes into second place with Stephen Porter coming in third. In the fast PY fleet, Ray held on to his lead despite problems with time limits in a failing breeze.
Thanks are due to all involved : race officers, competitors (especially our visitors from Wicklow SC), rescue/mark laying crew, and shore volunteers.

We have arranged two coaching sessions with Graeme Grant. The plan is to have all the guys from last season, who are available (exams permitting) & additional juniors, who are keen to improve their boat handling & sailing skills. Please spread “the word”. The sessions are as follows :.
Monday 9 May 2011
Philip Watson will be running cruiser coaching sessions over two evenings in June - the 9th and 10th June. Philip has vast experience in sail making and also is a successful racer. Both Philip and Watson sails have a string of successes across a wide range of classes.
Phillip will spend around 20-30 minutes on each participating boat going through sail trim and boat handling including helming, boat trim, tacking, gybing, etc. on upwind and downwind legs. The first session will run during club racing on Thursday evening.
This is likely to be a good session for everyone. Tom Bailey will provide a BBQ afterwards and Phillip will have an informal question and answer session.
There will be no charge for the sessions making it extremely good value for money!!!
Please let John Hayes know if interested and which night suits best. We are starting the first session at 6:00 on the Thursday evening and 6:30 on the Friday.
Just a reminder that adult training is on the last week of May, starting on the 23rd May. We still need cruisers to help take out adult trainees. Can you please let John Hayes know if boats are available from Tuesday evening to Friday evening - we still need plenty of boats.
This is a great opportunity to introduce Bray Sailing Club to potential new members so please try and support this event.
Three marks were laid on Saturday thanks to Martin Darcy and his team. Two were to replace the Harbour Mark and the Aquarium Mark that were washed ashore during the recent easterlies. The third mark is a new one positioned between the harbour and the Outfall Mark.
The GPS coordinates for the Aquarium and the new mark are below and these will form part of the racing course in future.
Sunday 1 May 2011
Because of the problems with the harbour silting up and a shorter tidal window there are some changes to the sailing programme for the month of May. Please spread the word to those who may not see this notice.

The first day of the season this year coincided with Mothers' Day, but for those hardy souls who got in early with the bunch of flowers, sailing was the prize. The weather was kind, with bright sunshine and a brisk but cold breeze for the 13 boats who made it to the start. Our excitement for the day was to see a flying fifteen spinnaker and a flying fifteen capsize! The OD tried to put into practice the gems picked up at the OD lecture earlier in the week but I am afraid to no avail... The flukey winds and strong tide put paid to any aspirations of a perfect course, but none the less, we had 3 good races - and as they say in all the best storybooks, all went home tired but happy.
Thanks to my able assistant John, to Helen and Des on rescue and our official photographer Juris.
