Winter courses 2018/2019

Just because the sailing season is in winter mode with fewer events taking place, it doesn’t mean that the club has closed down!

We are pleased to launch our winter programme for 2018/2019, with an exciting selection of courses to help you acquire new skills and prepare for next season.

Details of all of these courses may be found below  and on the club website, where you will also find booking forms and payment details. You will also find a flyer and booking form attached to this email.  

 

NATIONAL POWERBOAT CERTIFICATE (LEVEL 2)

The aim of this course is to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to safely, and effectively, skipper an open powerboat, by day, on inland and coastal waters with which you are familiar.

We are planning to run two of these courses on a Friday evening (shorebased) and all day Saturday and Sunday (on the water)

Dates:

Course 1:  9th, 10th, 11th November,

Course 2:  7th, 8th, and 9th December

Cost €200 for BSC members, €250 for non-members.

The minimum age for attendance is 16 years at the date of the course. Successful participants will receive their National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2) at the conclusion of the course.

 

VHF MARINE RADIO SRC COURSE

This course is designed for those who wish to get certified in the use of Short-Range Very High Frequency radio telephony  (This is a requirement for the use of a marine VHF radio).   No previous experience is assumed or required.   Small groups will ensure maximum learning time, and a Department of Transport, Tourism, and Sport approved examiner will attend on the final evening to conduct the state approved examination. The license when issued lasts for life.  [Note that you will need to bring your passport and two passport photos to the exam.  Your license when issued includes a photo.] 

Dates:  Monday 19th to Thursday 22nd November from 1930hrs to 2130hrs each night, with the exam taking place on the final night. (NB – you MUST attend all sessions) 

Cost €150 for BSC members, €200 for non-members (includes exam fee)

 

  

COASTAL SKIPPER/YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE – THEORY COURSE

An RYA qualification will be issued on successful completion of this course, which will be run on Friday nights from 1930hrs to 2130hrs.   Participants may miss a maximum of two classes over the course duration.   

 

Course topics include:

·      position fixing

·      course shaping and plotting

·      tidal knowledge

·      use of almanacs and admiralty publications

·      electronic position finding equipment

·      taking and interpreting weather forecasts

·      plotting weather systems

·      weather predictions using a barometer and by observation

·      collision regulations

·      customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad

 

The course is taught over 40 hours, and the dates are listed below. The course cost is €490 and may be paid in two instalments. 

November: 2nd, 9th 16th, 23rd, 30th

December: 7th. 14th, 21st

January: 11th, 18th, 25th

February: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd

March: 1st, 8th, 22nd, 29th

 

The following two courses will be held in the first quarter of 2019, but we are keen to gauge interest now so that we know how many courses to schedule.      

SAFETY BOAT CERTIFICATE

The aim of this advanced course is to introduce candidates to the techniques, skills, equipment and communications required whilst at the same time ensuring that persons have the knowledge and skill to take charge of powerboats which are involved in:

  • escorting racing fleets of dinghies, windsurfers, canoes & powerboats
  • providing safety cover for training fleets, Racing fleets, Water festivals, water activities within local communities on inland and inshore areas
  • assisting in race management duties (Sailing & Powerboat)
  • Operating in areas they are familiar with.

 

Participants must hold a National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2) and have logged at least 20 hours practical experience.

 

We plan to hold this course over one weekend (all day Saturday and all day Sunday) during the first quarter of 2019 (exact dates to be decided). The course cost will be €200 for BSC members, and €250 for non-members.

ADVANCED POWERBOAT CERTIFICATE

 

The aim of this course is to develop your boat handling, seamanship, pilotage, and navigation skills up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safely by day in all coastal waters and by night in coastal waters with which you are familiar.

 

Participants must hold a National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2) and have attended a Coastal Navigation course for small boats. If you are interested in attending a Coastal Navigation course first, please let us know – the cost will be €100, and the course duration will consist of twelve hours tuition.

 

We plan to hold an Advanced Powerboat course over one weekend (all day Saturday and all day Sunday, including night navigation on the Saturday night) during the first quarter of 2019 (exact dates to be decided). The course cost will be €200 for BSC members, and €250 for non-members.
